The Fall ASCOA Education and Compliance Conference will be held on November 16-17, at the Hotel Zoso in Palm Springs California. ASCOA administrators, clinical coordinators and ASCOA corporate will be attending. The agenda will include issues regarding risk management, human resources, CQI, and the new CMS guidelines. In addition, the revised Policy and Procedure manual will be introduced, as well as discussion regarding supply costs and clinical and financial benchmarking.

He was educated at the University of Kansas and is furthering his education at Baker University School of Graduate Studies. Prior to joining ASCOA, Mr. Parra served as a Senior Business Development Manager at a Fortune 100 company, focusing on document management and imaging solutions.

She has over 17 years experience in all aspects of ASC operations, and has served as Executive Director and as a consultant for ASC management and development. Additionally, she has 15 years of physician professional practice management experience and 8 years of expertise with Clinical Site Research. She has her RN from Florida State University and her MBA from Nova University.

Prior to joining ASCOA, he was the Northeast Area Vice President for the Medical Systems Group of Olympus America, Inc., where he was responsible for over $100,000,000 in annual sales to the GI and surgical markets. Mr. Johnson has worked in the medical business for nearly 25 years and holds a BA from the University of Delaware.

ASCOA is pleased to announce that Amy Riley has joined ASCOA serving as a Vice President of Development. Her career has consisted of both the clinical and professional aspects of healthcare including head nurse for one of the largest emergency facilities in the country, pharmaceutical sales representative for Johnson & Johnson, and marketing director for a large pain management practice. Amy was educated at the University of Virginia and Kennesaw State University. She has extensive knowledge in practice management and expansion as well as ASC development.

The semi-annual ASCOA Educational Conference was held on June 3-4, 2004 at Lake Tahoe for administrators and billing staff. The agenda included a tutorial on correct coding for the ASC, Human Resource issues and Financial and Clinical Benchmarking. The next ASCOA conference will be held in Orlando in October 2004.

CASC Certification titles were presented to ASCOA administrators and ASCOA allied health professionals, who were honored at the Presidential Luncheon at the FASA/5th International Congress on Ambulatory Surgery, held at the Hynes Convention Center, Boston, MA on May 8-11, 2003. Those who pass the CASC examination have demonstrated a high level of expertise and comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the delivery of patient care, quality management, human resources, financial and business development, and regulatory and legal issues in the ASC. ASCOA is honored to have had the greatest number of administrators who received the CASC certification this year.

Battle Creek, Michigan – The Brookside Surgery Center has become the first ASCOA surgery center to do unicompartmental knee replacements (or partial knee resurfacing), a procedure that can require a 23-hour stay. The patients are admitted at 7:30am to a private room with a warm and cozy atmosphere, cable TV, a recliner for the family and are served lunch from the local restaurant of their choice. The goal is to discharge the patients, pain-free, by 5:00pm. This goal has been met and both patients and physicians have been very satisfied.

Buffalo, New York – Ambulatory Surgery Center of Western New York is expanding. They are currently at capacity with case volume averaging 700-800 cases monthly. The existing Center is 5,600 sq. ft. with two ORs and two procedure rooms with specialties that include ophthalmology, plastics, ENT and podiatry. The expanded Center will be over 12,000 sq. ft. with four ORs and three procedure rooms and will include orthopedics. The date for the anticipated completion is May 2003.

Hilton Head, South Carolina – ASCOA held the first Educational Conference for Clinical Coordinators at the Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort on November 8-9, 2002. The agenda included issues regarding latex allergies, infection control, case costing, TQM, and the Clinical Coordinators’ purchasing responsibilities in the ASC environment. Roundtable discussions included: disciplining staff, performance evaluations, and the purpose and use of the indicators snapshot.

St. Louis, Missouri – ASCOA’s 5th Administrator’s Conference was held on September 25-27 at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at Union Station. The agenda included “Effective Contract Negotiation Strategies and Rate Setting Analysis”, and included roundtables and discussions on HIPAA compliance, cost comparisons of medical supplies, physician recruitment, and case costing. Additionally, in preparation for the CASC exam, there was an extensive review prior to the exam which was given on Saturday, September 28th. The CASC exam (Certified Administrator Surgery Center) was given for the first time to administrators and those seeking positions as ASC administrators. Certification as an ASC administrator will benefit the patients, physicians, owners and employees of the ASC.

Coral Gables, Florida - ASCOA is pleased to announce that James Seymour has accepted the responsibility of Administrator of the Surgery Center of Coral Gables located in Coral Gables, Florida. Norwell, Massachusetts – ASCOA’s second Administrators’ Conference was held in April in Las Vegas, Nevada. The agenda included a presentation by our New York administrators on Accounts Receivables. Other subjects on the agenda were Case Costing, Infection Control, and Benchmarking. ASCOA’s corporate attorney, Scott Becker from Ross & Hardies spoke on Legal Compliance and Safe Harbor Issues. Administrators of our ASCs located across the country were in attendance. The next ASCOA conference will be held in Naples, Florida in October 2001.

Lambert, President, commented, "We are very excited to work with The Ambulatory Surgery Center of Columbus. The group has obtained contingent approval for a multi-specialty CON and has terrific case volume to bring to the center." The center will consist of 3 ORs in 14,600 SF and will be located on Weems Rd. in Columbus. We expect orthopaedics to be the center's most significant specialty and for the center to be complete by year-end 1999.

Albany, New York - The physician owners of Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America (ASCOA) announce that the projects with which they are involved in Buffalo, Plattsburgh, and Syracuse NY all received Public Health Council approval today from the State of New York. Each of these projects is expected to be completed by year-end 1999. The Buffalo project is expected to perform 2,400 cases in its first year; the Plattsburgh center is expected to perform 1,512 cases in its first year; and the Syracuse center is expected to perform 2,000 cases in its first year of operation.

Hingham, Massachusetts - Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America (ASCOA) announces the hiring of its new Chief Operating Officer, Suzanne Broadwater. Ms. Broadwater joins us with vast experience in all aspects of ASC development, accreditation, and management. Prior to joining ASCOA, Ms. Broadwater worked as a regional director and a director of operations for HealthSouth and National Surgery Centers. Ms. Broadwater has an MBA from Bellarmine College, a BS from St. Joseph College, and a diploma in nursing from the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing.
